Grace Heckenberg stands in Lone Fir Cemetery where more than 100 residents of The Oregon Insane Hospital (1862 - 1883) lie buried in unmarked graves.
In 1969, when Heckenberg was 17, she spent a year as a psychiatric patient at the Oregon State Hospital in Salem. Now 56, Heckenberg serves as a mental health advocate, and has worked steadily to create a memorial for the long forgotten patients. Shot for Street Roots.
